<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"><i> This is a guest blog that came in today. Awesome because it's true. I suppose it depends on where you live, but in Colorado, places like CB & Potts just don't cut it. So, thanks for writing in. And thanks for not settling for mediocrity!</i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">Years ago, I
went on my first trip to Manhattan with a man who, as a merchandise manager for
the old Neustedter company in Denver, was an old veteran of the New York scene.
He couldn’t decide which restaurant to take me to for my first Manhattan dining
experience, but remarked, “They’re all good here. A mediocre restaurant in New
York won’t last twenty minutes.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">I found this
to be pretty much true in San Francisco and other cities. In Oregon, I
developed a fondness for microwbrews, and in trying to sample every
establishment in Portland, I can pretty well conclude there aren’t any bad
ones. Nor are there any mediocre ones, which is more to the point. Who needs
it?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">The Colorado
microbrew scene seems to me to be as vibrant as Oregon’s—ever moreso, in its
own way, reflecting a population that tends to be more competitive than
Oregon’s. But as in Oregon, the beer in Colorado is simply outstanding.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">Imagine my
surprise at finding a place that challenged the definition of mediocrity!
Needing a quick meal close by our temporary apartment home last night, my wife
and I stopped at CB & Potts. While looking forward to a homefoody kind of
meal after a long day of moving, a good, hearty stout or holiday brew was
definitely the order of the moment.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">To call the
beer list unimaginative is an understatement.
It contained some of the usual suspects.
Nothing wrong with this, I guess. Not everyplace can sport an Oskar
Blues list. But at least you didn’t have to spend a lot of time on it, with so
few choices.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">My wife
ordered the Total Disorder Porter, while I sent for the holiday release, S’no
Angel weizenbock. Billed as chocolate in color with a creamy, complex body. It
was really the color of a sunbleached cardboard box with a body about as
complex as Hawaiian Punch. The porter, tasted more like
chocolate/coffee-flavored club soda. These weren’t bad, mind you. Just boring
and uninteresting.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">The menu
rotates around a very creative list of hamburgers. They all looked pretty good,
including my wife’s Reuben hamburger. The salad list could have come from
Anywhere USA. Steak and backribs also made an appearance, along with typical
pub fare. While acceptable—not great or memorable—the food items struck me as
being a dollar or two overpriced.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%;">
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;">The point
being, why go to CB & Potts? The locals apparently had cottoned onto that
conclusion already, since at 7 p.m. on a Sunday night, the help almost
outnumbered the customers. And while it took an inordinately long time to get
our food, I have to say the waitstaff was really good.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

I love the people, I love the volunteer staff, and damn do I love the beer, but this year, I have a couple other people to give thanks to.<br />
<br />
First, Trevor, <i>et al </i>over at Draft Magazine, thanks for helping us out with some last minute tickets. I can't tell you how much I (we) appreciate it :) The advice you've lent and communication level with us as we have embarked on this project has been tremendously helpful, and anything we can do for you from now into perpetuity, we will.<br />
<br />
Second, to Joey, Shawn and Kelly Kercher - what do I even say. Some last minute help allowed us to tighten up the website and there is no way that would've happened without you. So thanks. We'll chat. Sooner rather than later I hope.<br />
<br />
Enough of the sappy crap. On with the beer. <br />
<br />
For those of you who haven't been to the GABF, it really is incredible. Yeah, it becomes somewhat of a shitshow as Friday and Saturday progress, but in all the years I've been there, I've never seen a fight. This is strange to me. When you combine alcohol and crowds something always seems to go down - but not here. <br />
<br />
I waiver on the coolest part. Whether it's revisiting tried and true favorites, finding a shiny new brewery you've never encountered or just the general vibe, GABF is fun every year. It's like visiting the Louvre if you love art, Jerusalem if you love religion or Gilroy, California if you love garlic - OK maybe Gilroy is a stretch, but it is the Garlic capital of the US and home the best Garlic Festival ever. Maybe Corvallis, Oregon if you love Ryegrass. Ahem...better stop with the analogies.<br />
<br />
Anyhow. <br />
<br />
The good news is that we're days away from being essentially done with site for now. Feel free to sign up as a user here:<br />
<br />
http://www.microbrewmaps.com/ppSD2/login.php<br />
<br />
Right now we have every brewery mapped in the country (some newer ones not included - but email us and we'll get it done), and we are trying to correct some errors with a few addresses in our database (looking at you Loveland Aleworks). If you want to see what a brewery's page will look like, click the blue BETA button on the site, then on a location placemarker and you can see what we're integrating as I'm writing this. We're working on the map rendering speed as well.<br />
<br />
Some other tidbits are happening soon with our beer-finder application (launching in Colorado first) but we have some major bugs to work out, which of course costs time and money, but it should be pretty cool.<br />
<br />
Also - We're in the beginning stages of putting on a 5-part Brewery and Spirit Festival next Summer in Colorado, each 3 hour Festival being followed by a free concert. Should be freaking awesome, and we hope to see some of you there!<br />
<br />
So for now, Cheers!<br />

For first-timers, it's an experience unto itself. Prepare yourself not for a light acidic taste in the back of your throat, but for a full frontal assault on the senses. Something like this if you're not expecting it:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZC-WfUHUBSw?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I tried for like two seconds to find real adults drinking sour beer for the first and failed - stupid short attention span and all - but this captures it just as well.<br />
<br />
I happen to like sour beers. A lot, in fact. They're like a petty addiction. One of the first I had was at a dinner at <a href="http://pizzeriabasta.com/" target="_blank">Pizzeria Basta</a> in Boulder, CO. It was a pairing in cohoots with <a href="http://www.thebruery.com/" target="_blank">The Bruery</a>, and the beer they chose to bring was one I had wanted to try for awhile - Sans Pagaie. Great frickin beer. It got me hooked. But once again, if your trying it for your first time - just give it a few sips. The first might knock you on your *ss, and make you never want to go near one again, but be patient. By your third sip into it, you begin to get it, and a whole new world of complex flavor opens up. I promise. Or maybe I'm just trying to trick you - either way there's only one way to find out.<br />
<br />
So, upon a trip to Portland, Or., I simply had to run by Cascade Brewing - specifically the <a href="http://www.cascadebrewingbarrelhouse.com/" target="_blank">Barrel House</a>. They are known for their sours, but produce other fantastic beers as well. Take a look at their collection here:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.cascadebrewingbarrelhouse.com/Beer_Menu_07-05-12.pdf">http://www.cascadebrewingbarrelhouse.com/Beer_Menu_07-05-12.pdf</a><br />
<br />
The Cascade Brewing Barrel House is pretty cool. Nice and open. Staff knows their stuff, and I hear the food's great too, but I can't vouch for that because I didn't eat any. A big plus is that they list beer pairings with their dishes, which I am into big time. Maybe next time...<br />
<br />
Honey Ginger Lime - Cascade Brewing<br />
<br />
We tasted a number of beers here, all of which were excellent. Saison de la Maison, Sang Noir (wow, excellent), and a few others, but the last was such a pleasant surprise I just feel like writing about it. Honey Ginger Lime. Cascade calls it a "sour honey rye ale was barrel aged for 8 months before aging additionally on ginger and lime zest". 7.5% ABV<br />
<br />
This beer pours very hazy, with deep gold color with some orange to it. Nice head - over an inch or so (forgot the damned tape measure) - with great retention.<br />
<br />
On the nose, pretty much lives up to it's name - strong ginger and citrus, with a limeade feel to it - Almost more like a cocktail than a beer.<br />
<br />
Taste damn near borders on refreshing and thirst quenching. Strong sour notes hit the back of the palate immediately, but give way to spicy ginger characteristics, and a mild sweetness to counter the harsh sour. Seriously bright and refreshing -<br />
<br />
Wow - Don't have anything to compare it to, but REALLY good. Great Spring/Summer beer, and just plain drinkable. <br />

So a few weeks ago, I took a trip to Portland, Oregon. Having lived there from about 1993 – 2003, I am pretty familiar with it, and know damn well not to be fooled by the weather during the summer. Beautiful green trees. Blooming flowers. Fresh vegetables. It’s really a paradise for about 2 months out of the year. Then the rain and endless cloud cover hits for the next 10 months, and you wonder why you live there. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Still, it was absolutely beautiful, and I missed it in a weird way. <br />
<br />
Being so heavily involved in the craft beer industry, I have been dying to return to the area – to check out Beervana in all its glory. So many breweries, so little time… Still, there were a couple I had been meaning to try out, and just never been able to get around to it. <br />
<br />
Hair of the Dog Brewing, Lompoc Brewing, Cascade Brewing, Vertigo Brewing – all were visited, and each deserves a TON of respect. I’ll definitely be reviewing each of them. It’s just that I love being blown away by something when I least expect it.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Not even sure where to start. It was kind of a last minute decision to go by, as I hadn’t heard much about them out here in Colorado. Gave them a ring, and was greeted by Elan (who, as it turns out, went to University of Colorado). Nice guy, and he agreed to show us around that afternoon.<br />
<br />
Want to know what do with a vacant call center facility? Besides torching it? Turn it into a 10bbl brewery, like Coalition did. Kudos for taking the Avery Brewing route and occupying empty warehouse space – having the foresight to acknowledge the possibility of expanding into surrounding spaces as need requires.<br />
<br />
The Brewpub itself is exactly like I prefer my brewpubs to be - small, open to the street and with people who are actually smiling. What a tremendous neighborhood feel to the place, and a staff that was extremely welcoming. Just perfect. <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Nice, right? Don't you wish you were here?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
No surprise that the beer was perfect too.<br />
<br />
We tasted everything on tap – Wheat, Cream Ale, Pale, ESB, IPA, King Kitty Red, Maple Porter, Apollo Creed CDA, Hanso Stout and Hanso Stout aged in Bulleit Barrels. <br />
Let me tell you – every beer was beyond fantastic. I can’t recommend them enough. If you live in Portland, and enjoy craft beer, you should actually be ashamed of yourself for not already stopping in if you haven’t already (tell them we said hi if you do). However, if there were a gun to my head, and I had to pick a favorite, I say the King Kitty Red Ale was out of this world good. And Red’s aren’t even my thing.<br />
<br />
King Kitty Red Ale<br />
<br />
No joking with the “red” part. Pours a fairly dark red/amber color, with just a touch of haziness.<br />
<br />
Smell was rather soft, with a pleasant mix of caramel, some malt and something else I couldn’t put my finger on. Kind of an earthy/herbally smell. Not really grassy per se – I’ll have to try it again I guess. Some fruitiness in there too.<br />
<br />
Taste-wise – just a really interesting beer. Best as I can describe it, is as having very strong central core of malt presence, with a variety of different hop notes emanating out from that, creating a very well layered beer. Very little alcohol taste. Really pleasant, full mouthfeel, and a surprising crisp finish.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Coalition, thanks for having us – I’ll be back next time I'm in the area. And if you’re a homebrewer, and live in Portland, check out their <a href="http://coalitionbrewing.com/coalator_program.php" target="_blank">Coalator program</a>…really cool stuff!<br />
<br />
Cheers!<br />

Great for people watching and contracting diseases doctors thought only survived in Petri dishes, or maybe a lost virus re-discovered in some subterranean ice sheet. Dirty, but overall quite entertaining. The Denver Airport is one of my favorites. Not because it runs well or is clean, but because of the many mysteries surrounding it. “An African woman in colorful native garb; a Native American woman who’s heritage the airport’s art supposedly celebrates; a blonde girl with cupid bow lips, a Star of David on her chest and a bible in her hands. Each lay dead in open coffins for your viewing pleasure.”</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
“A burning city, children sleeping on piles of bricks, a line of mourning women in rags with dead babies, limp in their arms. A huge, looming military figure in a gas mask brandishes a sword and machine gun. Part of an actual note written by a child interred in a Nazi death camp. Strange words embedded in the floor with no explanation about what they mean.”</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Not exactly the pick-me-ups one is looking for after a cramped flight. (More here if you’re interested <a href="http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/sociopolitica/esp_sociopol_denver02.htm">http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/sociopolitica/esp_sociopol_denver02.htm</a>) </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Beer, beer, beer. Change the subject. Airport bars are fabulous for atypical reasons. From the White Zinfandel drinking Account Exec., to the Double Vodka Bloody Mary-drinking Kids Camp Counselor, these airport watering holes make travelling so much more enjoyable. So, to Lefty’s Front Range Grille at DIA, thanks for the good times. And for having craft beer on tap.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Singletrack Copper Ale – Boulder Beer Company</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Boulder Beer is Colorado’s first microbrewery, and received the 43rd brewing license issued nationally, so massive props right there. This brew arrived on draft, in a pint glass, and was just a little hazy and light coppery red in color. Finger and a half of head which dissipated quickly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Smelled of light citrus and thick caramel. Taste is very similar to the smell, with caramel and toffee notes mixed with just enough citrus. Medium carbonation.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
While I can’t say this beer stands out in any particular way, it’s certainly not terrible either. I’d have it again, if I were stuck in the airport, but there are just too many similar beers out there.</div>

I’ve lived in North Boulder off and on for awhile, but even now that I’ve moved 20 miles away, I still pop in when I can. It’s one of the few places able to nail down excellent service, a high quality menu with great variety, an EXCELLENT happy hour and a craft beer selection carefully put together by GM and all-around-cool-guy Adam Perkins. Best yet, is that it maintains a “neighborly” feel without the pretentiousness of most Boulder, Co. establishments. Oh, and a sweet patio in the summer. And if you prefer liquor, you can’t beat their $5 house margarita (fresh Lime, simple sugar, etc.) during Happy Hour.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The GM Adam is always there, and seems like he pretty much takes care of everything. Alternately throughout the day, he’ll be doing office work, helping behind the bar, helping servers get food out, chatting it up with customers and jumping on the line if that’s what needs to happen – and often it does. Sometimes he sits down I think, but maybe not. This first photo is how customers see Adam:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Hehe. Anyway, craft beer. With not too many handles to work with, they do a magnificent job of keeping things fresh by constantly rotating things in and out, so there is usually something new to try. This time around it was hot enough outside to keep most people in a constant state of inelegance (paraphrased from Jane Austin, I think), so I wanted something light. Of course they had exactly what I wanted on tap – Victory Brewing Co.’s Summer Love Ale, a really delightful brew for scorching hot days.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Victory Brewing Co’s Summer Love Ale:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I think it’s classified as a Blonde Ale, but has similar qualities to a Golden or even a Pilsner. Poured into a standard pint glass, this beer had an incredibly clear, straw color to it. Intense effervescence. In terms of smell, very strong in the hops department, with some hints of grain and a light fruitiness.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Taste-wise, the hops are the first thing I noticed, with floral and grapefruity notes, but not overpowering by any stretch of the imagination. A very light malt core is present, and the more you drink, the more complex it gets, with nice light grainy taste in the background as well. It finishes up very clean and dry – as it should. Extremely refreshing with a high level of carbonation, this beer really is a perfect beer for hot days.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Would definitely recommend it again and again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So to everyone at Murphy’s North, and Victory Brewing – Cheers!</div>

Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talkin' bout a little place called... <span style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;">Situated roughly in the middle of Denver and Boulder, on about 120th Ave between Sheridan and Lowell , The Old Man is textbook diamond in the rough material. Yeah, there is a Walmart, Kohl's, Home Depot, closed K-Mart and, well, just about every strip mall hell destination known to mankind. But there it is, nestled next to a vacant a golf course. The Old Man. From the outside, some might be scared to enter. It looks like a roadhouse from a horror movie. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;">But don't be scared. 1980's Datsuns parked next to brand new Cadillac Escalades. Line of Harleys at the door. 7 days a week you'll find the parking lot absolutely packed with customers. Best part? Everyone gets along. Bikers hold doors open for country club golfers. Egos get checked at the door. It's kinda like Cheers, where everyone knows your name, but way cooler. </span><br />

Yeah, so some of these are a bit pricey, but it's an incredible selection nonetheless. We dropped by one afternoon for lunch hoping to run into a friend and beer afficinado that works there (Hi Christi!). She wasn't there, so that sucked, but what a great place. Knowledgeable staff. Beautifully orchestrated menu. Check this out - Tur-duck-en made by their chefs in fast forward. Skip this if you don't like meat.</div>

Boulevard Tank #7 Farmhouse Ale:<br />
<br />
I'm a huge fan of farmhouse ales, especially during warm weather. There is just something about a good farmhouse ale that can't be topped. <br />
<br />
This one came poured in tulip glass, with a seriously heavy head. Moderately golden straw in color with just a little bit of haze, it is a beautiful beer to look at.<br />
<br />
Really nice aroma, with strong fruit overtones, particularly a citrusy grapefruit scent, but also a noticeable yeast smell. <br />
<br />
In terms of taste, is just plain good. Fairly hoppy for a Saison, but also has a nice light malt character going on. Some peppery flavors happening as well, but very citrus-forward. Fairly carbonated, this farmhouse ale finished very crisp and on the dry side.<br />
<br />
So if you find yourself in the Denver, swing by for a brew. You certainly won't regret it.<a href="http://euclidhall.com/" target="_blank"> http://euclidhall.com/</a><br />
Happy hours daily from 3-6pm<br />
<br />
Cheers!<br />

I’ve always been big on allegory, and really as I go through life I’ve come to realize just how important allegorical tales can be. So when I came across a pigeon with a broken leg in my apartment complex, I couldn’t help but study it. Day after day I watched this pigeon’s progression with life.<br />
<br />
I don’t know how this pigeon broke its leg. Maybe it flew into a window, after all, its wing looked a little screwy. Maybe it was just a runt and got picked on by the other pigeons. Perhaps it tried the old fly-under-a-moving-vehicle trick. I just don’t know, or if it even matters.<br />
<br />
The first time I saw it, it was completely unable to do anything. It couldn’t fly, it couldn’t walk, and was only able to move itself around by kind of flapping its wings and hoping it went the right direction. By whatever divine reason, it found itself near a birdfeeder, and seemed to survive only by what the other birds dropped on the ground. I don’t know about the water situation. Maybe it just waited for the sprinklers to come on, or a thunderstorm to hit. But there it was, just living.<br />
<br />
A few days later I spotted the little guy again. It seemed to have figured out the stand-on-one-leg thing, and was kind of able to hop around a bit. Still looked healthy. Pathetically it attempted to fly and land on a wrought iron fence as a car passed by, and kind of fell off – yes, I chuckled at its misfortune. Sue me. Landing on one leg just wasn’t in the cards yet I guess, but it did get off the ground, which was encouraging.<br />
<br />
Yet a couple more weeks went by, and this creature I figured would just die, kept figuring out how to do stuff. Fly to the top of the 3 story building. Land and walk on one leg. Food and water secured. All of life’s minor details seemed to have been resolved.<br />
<br />
I keep hoping this pigeon will stick around, but at the rate its going I’m just not sure. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-G50fow2T8ChYySKzsvyO6Y6EVq86aStb93od4OCcM-pu7w0cjsxi2C4if_xboVVQRlSyn95weiO239D-_mSFvOcLFQjo0Iav2cx5cISDDPBKm8VGrzdWdp9kTvs74zG8y83fb6eKQn7A/s1600/6_26_2012+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-G50fow2T8ChYySKzsvyO6Y6EVq86aStb93od4OCcM-pu7w0cjsxi2C4if_xboVVQRlSyn95weiO239D-_mSFvOcLFQjo0Iav2cx5cISDDPBKm8VGrzdWdp9kTvs74zG8y83fb6eKQn7A/s320/6_26_2012+001.JPG" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Here's the pigeon in the middle. You can kind of see it's leg sticking out sideways<br />on its right side.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
So to all the new craft brewers, bars, restaurants, startups and anyone else out there who can relate, don’t let a broken leg get you down. You’ll figure out how to adapt and survive. Yes, you’ll likely fail as many times as you succeed, but never let that deter you. I’ll leave you with my favorite proverb:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It knows that it must run faster than the fastest lion</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
or it will be killed.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Every morning a lion wakes up.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It knows that it must outrun the slowest gazelle</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
or it will starve to death.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When the sun comes up, you better start running.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
So get after it people - and don’t be afraid to break stuff.<br />
<br />
Cheers!<br />

George is CEO and owner at Native Rank and Local SEO, an internet Search Solutions firm in Denver. Their product is simply unbeatable, and it's been exciting to watch them find such a high degree of success and recognition in a difficult industry - truly mavericks in the Internet industry. We watched our site traffic continually double, so to everyone at <a href="http://www.nativerank.com/" target="_blank">Native Rank</a>, you guys rock. I'll most likely never plug another company on this blog, but seriously, give these guys a call if you want to be found on the internet.<br />

Beer. Food. Friends. Family. Not necessarily in that order. Last Thursday I had the quintessential experience-them-all-in-one place episodes. I found out that The Bruery was teaming up with a local restaurant, Pizzeria Basta, do a food and beer pairing dinner – a do not miss event in my book. <br />
<br />
For those that don’t know them, The Bruery out of Orange County produces some absolutely amazing beer, and routinely makes top lists in the country. I have only had a few of their beers to be honest, my favorite being a bottle of White Oak I found locally, but every single one I’ve tried has been simultaneously original and amazing. From their website –<br />
<br />
“Our calling is to create beers with character and depth using the simplest and purest of means. We do not filter or pasteurize our beers. All of our bottled beers gain carbonation through bottle conditioning, allowing carbonation to naturally occur through a secondary bottle fermentation. We strive to use unconventional ingredients, and we will proudly state what we put in our beers.”<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0ZrIseFgPZ1Y4QuCwepHDbHA38M0tg60PkAGxpiw3TLsjWNWpyOn5cPDi3jINRk-JuynfL0DBdKmgKt58wg9ZsK60rkD8pCQp1VN8-IhWQM89HGoHD00cA81BzrgJjFyD7-OSHPDVdKBp/s1600/Bruery+logo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0ZrIseFgPZ1Y4QuCwepHDbHA38M0tg60PkAGxpiw3TLsjWNWpyOn5cPDi3jINRk-JuynfL0DBdKmgKt58wg9ZsK60rkD8pCQp1VN8-IhWQM89HGoHD00cA81BzrgJjFyD7-OSHPDVdKBp/s1600/Bruery+logo.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Pizzeria Basta is another amazing little place. Chef and Owner Kelly Whitaker has studied abroad in Switzerland and Italy, in addition to working in two different Michelin star rated restaurants. After finding success as the opening chef at a wood-fired pizza restaurant in Hollywood, he moved back to Boulder in 2008. This is not your normal “pizza” joint – works of art are created here.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Like I said – if you like food and beer, do not miss. Attending the event with me: Nick (our CFO and Co-Founder), Rachael (Nick’s fiancée – first time we’ve met her, and she’s fantastic…think we’re all going to a cheese making class in the near future, but that’s neither here nor there…unless you like cheese), Ben (our CEO and Co-Founder) and myself (Director of Operations and Co-founder).<br />
<br />
First Course: Birra Basta – “Biere de Garde brewed with roasted zucchini, citrus and fennel. 8.5% abv.” – Served with Squash Blossom “fritti” and buratta over arugula.<br />
<br />
When I saw this beer on the menu, it certainly peaked my curiosity. It’s a super limited release brewed especially for Pizzeria Basta. Tasted similar to a saison, golden in color, with a really, really well developed, velvety body. Some faint notes of fennel in front, and some really light orange flavors, this beer was paired excellently with the dish – which was incredible in its own right.<br />
<br />
Second Course: Sans Pagaie – “Belgian style kriek made from a sour blonde aged in wine barrels and brewed with cherries. 5.8% abv.” -Served with Farro Salad, duck confit, Cyprus grove truffle tremor, and Colorado cherry.<br />
<br />
I love sour beers, but to some it’s just a little odd. I was really looking forward to this one, and in no way did it disappoint. The ruby red grapefruit color was a site to behold, and the high carbonation level was fantastic. Great balance of sour and fruit come forward, with a barely noticeable mustiness in there somewhere to. Finishes very crisp and dry and is downright refreshing. Again, paired with the earthiness of the duck dish, an absolutely perfect match as well.<br />
<br />
The last two courses I’m not going to review (but are included below). I try and keep these under 500 words, short attention span and all, but I will sum the rest up: Nick doesn’t like beets. I don’t know what the hell black garlic is but I want more. The Smoking Wood Porter is, well, smoky. Kinda like how your clothes smell when you come back from camping, only in liquid form (Rachael loved this beer, but mixed results from the rest of us).<br />
<br />
So, to Benjamin Weiss from The Bruery and the folks in the kitchen at Pizzeria Basta – I can’t thank you enough for putting this on. Out of this world good. Cheers!<br />

So we’re in the home stretch. For those of you who have visited the site, we want you to understand the final product will look nothing like this. What you see is a temporary site we have up just so the Google robots can do their thing. I have included a picture of the site Mock-up below just to give you all an idea of what the final product will look like. <br />
<br />
As of now, we have just over 52,000 pages indexed by Google – quite an accomplishment - and anticipate having close to 80,000-100,000 in the near future. We are registering over 200 Unique visitors per day – and growing as you read this. This probably means nothing to you, but trust me it’s cool. <br />
<br />
Just want to thank everyone directly involved (you know who you are), and to everyone who has shown support for what we’re trying to do. We think this will be a huge addition to the Craft Brew Industry, and also to those who just like to drink beer. Cheers!<br />

Oh, and lots of flags on Memorial Day. And babies everywhere.<br />
<br />
I’m not complaining at all. Technically everything I need is within a few miles. Big Choice Brewery down the road, shopping, gas, restaurants and every chain known to man. If I didn’t make it clear in my last blog, I am not a huge fan of chains – especially chain restaurants. Generally they just suck. Unhappy staff. Bad craft beer selection. Poor food. Why deal with it? Sherlock’s Pub Co. (Baker St Bar and Grill, Boulder) does a really good job, and is an exception to the rule. There are some smaller chains that do pretty well, but there is one chain that has always stood out in my mind as doing a fantastic job, no matter what the location is – Old Chicago.<br />
<br />
And yes, there happens to be one walking distance from my house in my lovely corner of Suburbia.<br />
<br />
The first time I went to an Old Chicago was my first visit to Boulder, Colorado. It’s the original location, on Pearl St, which is an extremely well done walking mall. I’ve been told the same designers attempted to replicate the walking mall where I used to live in Eugene, Oregon, but it failed miserably. Somebody forgot to mention IT RAINS 300 DAYS A YEAR in Eugene. Dummies. Not exactly optimal walking mall conditions, unless you like being a human sponge.<br />

The Old Chicago location in Broomfield is one of my favorites (<a href="http://www.oldchicago.com/broomfield"><span style="font-size: x-small;">http://www.oldchicago.com/broomfield</span></a>). There is nothing particularly special about it – the décor is basically the same, the food is as good as anywhere else and they always have great craft beer on tap and in bottles - at least 110 of them and sometimes more. What I like about it are two things – first, it’s iconic in its level of consistency, and second, the bartender there is awesome. <br />
<br />
Perry Fletcher is the guy’s name, and it seems like he’s there every time we are, but he was nice the first time we went in, and is just as nice a year later - and damnit, he knows his beer. He’s a Nebraska fan, but that’s ok. <br />
<br />
Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA<br />
<br />
This is one of the best Imperial IPA’s I’ve ever tasted – might as well get that out of the way now so you know I am biased. It poured with a solid head, and ton of lacing down the glass. Deep, deep amber to copper in color. There is a slight hoppiness in terms of smell, but also a very prominent sweetness that comes forward.<br />
<br />
At 9%, it has barely any alcohol flavor to it at all. Amazingly smooth. Definitely a resinous, grapefruit taste with some floral overtones from the hops, but just as forward is the sweetness and roast malt qualities. Very well balanced overall.<br />
<br />
If you haven’t has this beer yet, make it a point to do so. Dogfish Head, to put it simply, makes great craft beer. <br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
Every time I go and eat somewhere, I take some notes on my
phone just in case I feel like reviewing it later. It’s all very secretive, black hat kind of
stuff. Sneaky, sneaky. For a moment in my little world, I am judge
and jury, and nobody knows it, which is cool because I enjoy judging people
when they don’t know they’re being judged.
This isn’t like American Idol, where you know you have to perform in
front of millions– hell, it’s not even a 3rd grade talent show – but
it’s the only way to get an honest look at a place.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Reading back through the reviews I’ve written, I noticed
they’re all pretty positive. This is
partly an axiom of the fact that I don’t go to crappy restaurants on purpose,
but also that I’m just kinda nice. So
this time we took a chance. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I started looking through my notes this morning for
something to write about, and came across this:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Our server (Saskia)</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Nancy smiley</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Urinal, 3 kitchen staff in line</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Chair almost broke</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Side menu items not obvious</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Liquor license broke</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I could do better by pissing in a pot and throwing corn in
there.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What does it all mean?
By itself, not a whole lot, but fortunately that’s why I take notes – to
trigger the experience. So let’s go through
this – I’m not even going to tell you the name of the restaurant until this is
through, but let me know if you guess it along the way.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Our Server/Nancy Smiley:
Ok, so I’ve stated before that I am big on customer service. It’s such a simple thing to produce. What a great feeling to walk into a place a
get a smile, see that things are well organized and so forth. Not this place. The Hostess was freaking out with a ¾ full
restaurant, running around like a chicken with its head cut off (for those of you
who haven’t actually seen a chicken run
around with its head cut off, well, use your imagination because it’s a site to
behold). The faces of the staff around
the place were better suited for a morgue or a prison camp.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Two bright spots – Our server (Saskia) was really good. She seemed to be fearing for her life, but
she was extremely cordial and attentive.
Besides her, we noticed only one other person was smiling in the building
(including customers by the way). We
think her name was Nancy, but can’t be sure…</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Urinal thing/Chair Almost Broke/Menu: These are all signs that no one there really
gave a shit. My brother had to switch
chairs because it almost collapsed, and mine was shaky under my whopping 170lb
frame. These are not good things. On a trip to the restroom, had to wait for
the available urinals with 3 kitchen staff ahead – more great planning on the
part of the restaurant. And the
menu? Pretty much a disorganized wreck
that we had a hard time finding the side dishes on.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Liquor License Broke:
Suck it, you bastards. If this
isn’t the Almighty giving you a sign that you suck I don’t know what is. Maybe if you served more than two quality
beers this wouldn’t have happened – but it did.
Fell right off the wall and crashed behind the bar. Beautiful.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I Could Do Better by Pissing in a Pot and Throwing Corn In
There: Yikes. Not so much in reference to the
entrees – which in their defense were really pretty good – but in reference to
the side dishes. Sorry for more prison
allusions, but I suspect Folsom State could have done a superior job on their
worst day. Enough said. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Ted’s Montana Grill at its finest. Maybe I caught them on a bad night, or maybe
I was in a crap mood. Or maybe they just
suck. Either way, it was clearly poorly
managed and staffed with people that didn’t want to be there. That’s a reflection of company culture. Even as far as chain restaurants are
concerned, this was a crappy experience, as I’ve been to many chains that have
happy staff. You know, the kind that
smile and stuff. And for Christ’s sake,
get some Craft Beer in this joint. How
disconnected are you? I can’t even do a
beer review because there was nothing worth reviewing.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Well, it’s good to know that there are plenty of better
places out there. Really makes a person
appreciate bars and restaurants that carry good product and produce a tolerable
atmosphere. I am kind of lucky I guess
to have lived in the Denver/Boulder area – tons of great places to eat, and
holy crap is the beer great. So to kudos
to those of you across the country doing it right!</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
I freaking hate traffic.
I remember once while I was driving from San Francisco to Eugene, Or., I
sat on the Bay Bridge for almost two hours.
It was a hot day and my AC kinda sucked, so sitting on a bridge filled
with exhaust, surrounded by idiots honking and changing lanes for no reason,
really started to piss me off. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>

Then this fly started buzzing around my windshield, and I
began to fixate on it. All my anger and
aggression became focused on this poor fly.
Finally he landed right in front of me on the windshield, so I curled up
my fist, and WHAM! I missed, and the
little guy escaped out the window. Joke
was on me, of course, because I left a huge diagonal crack in the windshield
stretching right across my line of site.
I would have to stare at this crack, sitting there in my car on the
bridge, and for the next 8 hours on the Interstate to Oregon. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

I don’t even know why I related this story, as it has nothing to do with
anything. Just wanted to throw it out

<div class="MsoNormal">
So the other day, we went to go meet with a friend at this
place called the Ale House at Amato’s, located in the Lower Highlands
neighborhood of Denver, Co. I had never
been there, so I was pretty excited to check it out. 42 rotating taps and rooftop seating
overlooking Denver seemed like a pretty good deal -that and the Breckenridge
Brewery produces some damn fine beer.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
I wish I could remember our server’s name, or had written it
down somewhere, because she was amazing.
I am huge on customer service.
Not the fake kind where it’s obvious they’re reciting from script, but
the kind of niceness that actually comes from being a good human, and caring
about the product. I never really know
exactly what I want when I go somewhere, but often have pretty specific tastes,
so I rely on the servers/bartenders to let me know the story. Usually they’re right.</div>

Thunder Stout – Breckenridge Brewery</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
What can I say, I wanted a Stout, and I got one. This beer pours absolutely pitch black in
color, with a full, light brown head.
The aroma is beautiful, with coffee and malty-sweet overtones – also a
roasty smell which is a nice touch of course.
The taste is really very similar to the aroma – coffee, malt and subtle
roastiness, but also a smoky aftertaste to it.
Fairly dry toward the end. Poured
on Nitro, so a solid creaminess to it. Great Stout, really enjoyable.<br />

understatement. Not in a bad way of
course, because the staff was able to efficiently move people in and out as
best they could. I’d be WAY more concerned
if they were empty on Mother’s Day. Just
two of us for lunch, and a 25 minute wait, so we saddled up to the bar to wait
it out. Not sure where to start with this place, because it has so much to offer...</div>

So we sat down, Kelli B. was our server,
and despite the fact she was terribly busy, absolutely made time for every one

really. We weren’t really sure what we

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
A pretty original beer. Kelli explained - and yes, I'm paraphrasing here - that brewers are pretty much
allowed to experiment with whatever they want.
Sometimes they strike gold, and experiments are moved to wider
production, as was the case with this beer.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
Deep red to ruby in color with good
clarity, this beer arrived with a strong head.
The aroma was a combination of pungent caramel goodness and slight
hoppiness. Very interesting in terms of
taste – a complex mix of molasses, strong malt and a toastiness that is hard to
describe. All balanced perfectly with
soft citrusy hop flavor, and mellow carbonation.</div>

It’s even better when you pull up to their grand opening and see families and kids and bouncy castles. I love bouncy castles…unfortunately I had to pass up the opportunity. This time.<br />
<br />
Walking up to the taproom, we introduced ourselves to the staff manning the door. They could not have been friendlier and welcoming, despite what seemed like overwhelming mass hysteria going on behind them. Glad to see they were busy and receiving some quality local support from the community.<br />
<br />
Inside, Operation Ivy was politely playing in the background, one of my favorite bands. Went up to the bar and met one of the brewers, Nathaniel. Although very busy, it was great to meet him, and awesome he took the time to do so. Four beers on tap: Saison, Type III IPA, Disconnected Red, and Poblano Stout. Turns out they’re all really good, but my personal favorite was the Saison. Anyone in the Front Range should try and stop by.<br />
<br />
Big Choice Brewing Saison –<br />
<br />
Nice sunny day = Saison drinking weather. Especially this one. True to form, this brew has exceptional carbonation, a beautiful golden-to-orange color, and deep haze. Strong head. Nose is full of fruity overtones, and yeast. Taste isn’t overly bold, with a nice mild sweetness. Very light in the hop department, which is perfect, and again a strong wheat/yeasty flavor.
Really great beers, and nice atmosphere. I will most certainly return, and am looking forward to it, as long as they keep cranking the punk/ska over the speakers. Bouncy castles not required, but always appreciated.

For the last few years, a bunch of us have been getting

be things like NFL gear, or beer. Maybe

I love Michael and I love Craft Beer.
No effing way I lose this one. I

My brother and I shoved off to the beer store to see what we could find.
Stone’s Arrogant Bastard? Too

Abbey’s Judgement Day? Good, but too
pretentious. Then I saw it.</div>

Santa Fe’s Chicken Killer Barley wine. Perfect!

Drank this in a huge Goblet, because that’s what Michael

beautiful, bright amber color, with a good strong head that dissipates rather

framed by a solid hop presence.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Perfectly
balanced flavor here - very malt forward which was awesome, but not too hoppy
which was really refreshing. I am not a
fan of most Barley wines for this reason, so it was really cool to taste this
Santa Fe product. Well done. Definitely a presence of alcohol at 10%, but
not a problem. Very sippable, and I’ll
be having this Craft again.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">Pulling into
the Avery Brewing complex is an adventure unto itself, and it’s been
entertaining watching them expand through a maze of warehouse space in South
Boulder off Arapahoe Ave, although I suspect what’s entertaining to me, has been
nothing short of a nightmare to them. A
pure, hellish nightmare – but what a great thing they’ve accomplished with the
hand that was dealt. Parking has always
been a disaster, but who cares - such a minor trade-off for some of the best
beer in the country. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">Recent news has
them purchasing a new piece of land , allotting them the ability to expand
their brewing capacity, the brewpub itself and the amount of requisite office
space. I am excited. You can read about it here: </span><a href="http://beerpulse.com/2011/10/avery-brewing-planning-to-stay-put-in-boulder/"><span style="font-family: Garamond, serif; font-size: 6.5pt; line-height: 115%;">http://beerpulse.com/2011/10/avery-brewing-planning-to-stay-put-in-boulder/</span></a><span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">
Good for them, and this plan attests to both the success and vision of
the Brewery itself.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">Now, like I
said, pulling in is an adventure. Prepare to dodge forklifts carrying palates of
delicious beer down the alleyway, random kegs and people scuttlebutting
around. Off to the right just after
their main offices is the tasting room.
Exit the vehicle, and take in the scene.
Smell the air, it’s a beautiful thing.
Faint skunky smell of hops and malt and fermentation.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">The tasting
room is cool, and the staff is totally knowledgeable and friendly – more than
happy to help you through their selection of brews on tap. This time around, I saw they had one of their
crafts I hadn’t yet tried before – Collaboration Not Litigation Ale. Here’s the backstory:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 9.65pt; margin-bottom: .25in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">“Salvation. The name of two
intricate Belgian-style ales, created by us, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River
Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 9.65pt; margin-bottom: .25in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">After becoming friends a few
years ago, we realized we both had a Salvation in our lineups. Was it going to
be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the name rights? “Hell, no!” we said.
In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the
best qualities of each and create an even more complex and rich libation. In
April 2004, in a top secret meeting at Russian River Brewing (well, actually it
was packed in the pub and many were looking over our shoulders wondering what
the hell was going on), we came up with the perfect blend of the two
Salvations.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 9.65pt; margin-bottom: .25in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 9pt;">Natalie, Vinnie’s much more
significant other, exclaimed, “We should call this Collaboration, not
Litigation Ale!” “Perfect,” we shouted! We celebrated deep into the night (or
is that morning?). Fast forward to November 14, 2006. After talking about it
for over two years, we finally decided to pull the trigger and Vinnie made the
journey to Avery Brewing to brew his Salvation exactly as he does in his
brewery</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 6.5pt;">.” (</span><a href="http://www.averybrewing.com/our-ales/91"><span style="font-size: 6.5pt;">http://www.averybrewing.com/our-ales/91</span></a><span style="font-size: 6.5pt;">)<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .25in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; mso-line-height-alt: 9.65pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">So that’s cool. On
with the review:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .25in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; mso-line-height-alt: 9.65pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">Collaboration Not Litigation Ale:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .25in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; mso-line-height-alt: 9.65pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">Just a pretty beer.
That’s all.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .25in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; mso-line-height-alt: 9.65pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">Seriously though, it really is a great beer. Pours a dark brown to amber color, with a
solid head. Definitely has a light yeast
and slightly dank fruity smell to it. Traces
of alcohol as well. In terms of taste,
it has a good caramel malty base, with very little bitterness at all. Good variety fruity flavors, with a yeasty
mustiness that balances well. Extremely
mellow on the palette. Lightly carbonated and unexpectedly drinkable. Overall, it’s truly a solid beer, and I’ll be
having more.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .25in; margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in; margin-top: 0in; mso-line-height-alt: 9.65pt; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">So anyway, Avery serves great beer. Great folks.
Great company in general. So find
out if they distribute to your area, and pick up whatever you can. If you’re in the Boulder, Co. area, stop by and
say hello.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

overtones, with a good backdrop of floral hoppiness. Incredibly smooth on Nitro. Another must drink if you’re in town.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;"><b><br /></b></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">Now here’s a West Coast IPA to be proud of. Really nice to experience this after the
Illusion Dweller, as they play off one another real well. This brew is again a hazy amber, with a
strong foamy head. Extremely hop forward
and resinous, with additional citrus overtones.
There is a nice maltiness in the background to kind of help balance out
the hop character – but make no mistake, it’s hoppy. Overall a very drinkable beer, and great
counterbalance to some of the others we tasted today.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;"><b>Dropkick Stout: </b><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">Why not finish with a Stout? While not out of this world, this is a
readily drinkable American Stout, and is really pretty good. Pitch black in color with a thin, brown head,
this beer has a strong smoky taste to it with good malt character. It’s well balanced with a hoppy background,
and has a great feel in the mouth.
Finishes kind of clean and dry which is nice.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

where I was like “whoah, that’s just horrible”. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

great town. People drive like crap, but
I think that about most places – honestly I’m probably the worst offender, so
maybe I fit in well. One of my favorite
spots is the walking mall on Pearl St. - great cafés, bars, restaurants,
shopping and people watching. On a sunny
day, it’s just a fantastic place to be. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">Bombshell Blonde:</span></b><span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;"> Started off with Bombshell Blonde, a
very light golden-colored beer, perfect for hot sunny days. With a nice head, and well carbonated, this
brew showed a great balance of light hops and light, malty sweetness. Kind of a had a dry, even pilsner-y
aftertaste, but really was a delicious beer – would work great as a session
beer.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">1636 Belgian Dubbel</span></b><span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">: This one was quirky – Dark straw to amber in
color, this beer had a kinda sharp, yeasty nose to it. A nice balance of caramel malt and hops, with
the hops certainly lingering on for awhile.
Really very light bodied overall for a Belgian, but with decent
complexity and soft carbonation. Not bad
at all!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">Colorado Kind:</span></b><span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;"> A Mountain Sun classic, and the first beer I
tasted when I moved to Colorado. Yeah,
it tastes like it’s hopped with skunky weed, and the rumors will persist, but
it’s truly a great beer. Great nose,
with hints of sweet grapefruit and orange.
Voluminously hopped, with a nice mild sweetness to balance it a
bit. Beautiful amber color and good
carbonation, this beer really is a classic creation. Very good American Pale Ale.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

Baseball is here! I know, I know - It's not for everybody, but I love it. We used to go to many SF Giants games at Candlestick Park with (alternately) my father, my grandparents (who had season tickets for like a billion years) or my Uncle. A lot of great nostalgic memories, so I figured for those of you out there who enjoy the game, I might as well find a list of who serves what beer where. I'll try and keep this updated, as many parks are opting to increase there selection, SO if I missed anything, which I'm positive is the case, or you hear of changes/additions, just let me know and I'll get it updated! <span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;">So, I’m walking
around the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Co., hoping to run into

would be one of the chosen few to get a taste.
I find the Dogfish Head booth (quite crowded) and…<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Garamond, serif;"> Anyhow,
here’s a side thought that hit me while I was wading through the throngs of inebriated
folk at the festival: The Great American
Beer Festival is an interesting hyper-representation of what Google is trying
to do with its local search listings (only live). Seriously, it is. 50,000 “users” over 3 days trying to navigate
500 breweries and over 3,000 beers. A
single individual just can’t drink 3,000 beers in a night, so how do you
choose? Here’s what I noticed about
decision-making:<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Tell you what – When you drink a lot of beer, it’s becomes
increasingly rare to come across brews that are truly original. Ones that make you rethink what brewing can
be, rather than what it’s about. By no
stretch of the imagination am I disparaging traditional brewing methods. Rinse and repeat. I love traditional styles, and can’t express
my appreciation enough to the brewers that continue to produce them. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
It’s just such
a nice change of pace to really come across something so original that it
reshapes how you think about beer.
Whether you enjoy them or not (I actually only liked one of these two
I’m about to review), it’s just plain cool.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">

<b>Dogfish Head Midas
Touch – <o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
One of the
first of Dogfish Head’s Ancient Ales series, “Midas Touch is based on molecular
evidence found in a Turkish tomb believed to have belonged to King Midas.” <span style="font-size: 8pt;">(http://www.dogfish.com/ancientales)</span>
Awesome, right? </div>

<span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;"> </span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">I don’t even know quite how to describe this
one – It’s not mead.</span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;"> </span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">It’s not a
wine.</span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;"> </span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">It’s not a beer.</span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;"> </span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">It’s a really interesting amalgamation of all
three.</span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;"> </span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">If you’ve tasted a honey liquor
like mead, you can definitely taste the honey coming through, and if you’ve had
a dessert wine like Muscat or late harvest Riesling, that’s there too.</span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;"> </span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">However it’s spiced, Dogfish Head manages to
create a nice balance, so that the sweetness isn’t overpowering.</span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;"> </span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">Definitely a sipping beer at 9%.</span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;"> </span><span style="text-align: left; text-indent: 0.5in;">I would definitely buy this beer again, but I can see how it wouldn’t be for everyone.</span></div>

<b> </b>I wish there were a weirdness scale

so it sinks in. Wierdness. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
It’s brewed
with an ancient strain of wheat, loaves of bread, chamomile, dom-palm fruit,
and unrevealed Middle Eastern herbs. I
hope that gives you some idea of it’s weirdness. Oh, I forgot.
The brewer’s even collected a strain of Egyptian Yeast on a Petri dish
while travelling there…</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
As far as
taste…let me relate this story. My
brother and I shared a bottle. I took
the first sip, and had no idea what to think.
I wasn’t sure if I liked it or hated it because it didn’t fit into any
category that I could associate it with.
He tasted it, and pretty much said it was one of the worst beers he’d
ever had, and that it reminded him of how the inside of Nepalese stores smelled
when he travelled to Nepal. That kind of
ruined it for me, and all I could taste after that was Nag Champa incense,
Cumin and sand. With carbonated
water. So if you’re into that kind of
thing…</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
All in all, Dogfish Head is a cool brewery. I’ve tasted some of the more traditional
beers, and they’re fantastic. I love
this experimental wing of their brewery, and can’t wait to see what they put
out in the future.</div>
