Beervana

Read this post on another site, www.habitationstation.com, and loved it so much I thought I should repost it.  Habitationstation.com is real estate site run by Terradigm Realty, but they're doing some cool things - like blogging about beer.  Who does that?  If I ever buy a home in Portland, Or., I'll be going through them.

Anyhow, hope you enjoy!

"Need another reason to Iove Portland?  Had to look this up but Wikepedia asserts Portland has more breweries and brewpubs per capita than any city – not just in the country, but in the world.  That’s amazing.  I haven’t bothered researching this myself, but why would I bother.  If it’s on the internet, it’s true.  Duh.

I actually did try and research it a bit.  I love the site Beer Advocate.  They generally have lots of great information, and very trustworthy at that.  The problem is their servers have been down for a few days, apparently for scheduled maintenance, but one never knows.  I’ll have to check back with them when they’re up and running again. (*Beer Advocate update – Just redoing their website.)

Men’s Journal apparently didn’t bother to really research this at all.  One of their articles listing the top 5 beer towns in the US attempts to delineate the subject. They have San Diego and NYC ahead of Portland, which is just retarded.  Curious what their parameters are for “best” because they’re way off.  Nice work, morons.  Even funnier is it took two authors to screw this up.

The Brewer’s Association is another GREAT site for all things beer related, and they actually do their homework.  They cite a 2010 US Census survey - unfortunately it’s by state, not city - but unbelievably New Hampshire has more breweries per capita than any state in the union.  Congratulations New Hampshire!  You’ve got that going for you.  That and an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest meatball.  And President Franklin Pierce.

Just kidding New Hampshire.  It really is awesome, and I’ve heard your microbrews are fabulous, and fully intend on visiting someday to find out firsthand, so please let me cross state lines when that happens.

So back to Portland.  If you like beer you might as well live here.  Yeah it rains a lot.  When I first moved here, it freaked me out that despite the buckets of rain falling, very few people bothered using an umbrella.  After I lost my fifth one I quit bringing one too.  So sit back, grab your favorite beer, be wet and pretend everything’s ok.  The sun will be out in July, I promise."
